West Mobile Swim Club "Marlins"

Brian Evans is the owner and head coach of the West Mobile Marlins. He has over 30 years experience as a competitive
swim coach. He formed what is now the West Mobile Marlins in 1997 after 14 years as swim coach with CMSA and GMAA.
As the Marlins certified USA head coach, he divides his coaching duties among all three levels of the Marlin team with
special emphasis on the 12 and unders. Over the years, Brian has developed numerous City of Mobile, State of Alabama
and Southeastern Champions. Brian has worked to develop swimmers at several noted establishments here in Mobile that
include the Country Club of Mobile , Heron Lakes Country Club (formally Skyline C.C.),Oakwood Swim and Racket Club,
Alpine Hills Swim Club and UMS-Wright Prep School. While at the Country Club of Mobile, Brian coached CCM to 9
straight MCAL City Meet Championships and also won two (Division 2) GMSDL City Championships while at Alpine Hills
Swim Club. He was named GMSDL "Coach of the Year ' in 1983 and 1985. He was also named the MCAL "Coach of the
Year " in 2001.Brian has earned a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Physical Education form the University of South
Alabama and an Athletic Trainers degree from the United States Sports Academy. Brian is also a current member of the
National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.
He continues full time employment as an Adapted Physical Education Specialist with the Mobile County Public School
system. He is also the current owner, Aquatics Director and Head Swim Team Coach of West Mobile Swim Club. He is a
member of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, has been married to his wife Debbie for 29 years and they have four daughters.

Gene Fulton serves as the Marlins 13-14 / Senior age group coach. Coach Gene comes to the Marlins after developing
numerous Southeastern qualifiers while serving as head coach of the Mobile Bay Aquatics and South Alabama YMCA.
While at SAY Gene also coordinated three separate YMCA pools and five coaches to unify as one team. As a swimmer,
Gene swam for Fort Lauderdale Swim Team under nationally know coach Jack Nelson where he competed at Junior and
Senior National levels. As a coach, Gene's commitment to teaching proper technique and attention to detail has helped him
produce many outstanding swimmers. Gene is married to his wife Jennifer and have two great sons, Wyatt (8) and
Hayden (4). He is a member of Saraland Methodist Church and truly believes that the life lessons you learn by
participating in competitive swimming can be extremely beneficial to you throughout your entire adult life.

Dan Howat is the Marlins 2009 "High School Training" coach. Dan is currently teaching Geman and holds the position of
head swim team coach at Baker High School. He also works during the summer months as the Aquatics Director at the
Country Club of Mobile. He was the former swim/diving coach at Heron Lakes C.C. from 1996-2000. He is a Mobile native,
swimming for CMSA and graduating from Murphy H.S. in 1998. He earned a double major in Economics and German from
Auburn University. Dan is married and has one baby girl- Eva Marie-who is seven months old. Contact Coach Dan at

Leighann Plagge is in her third year with the Marlins working as a USA certified coach assisting with the Bronze teams.
Leighann is a former USA swimmer with the Marlins and State qualifier for Baker High School. She has also served as an
assistant coach and swim instructor in the Mobile summer league. She is currently a Junior at the University of South
Alabama working towards her degree.
